Fix Home Page Hijacking
One of Geek Superhero's many features lets you fix your computer if your home page has been hijacked. This puts you back in control of your web browser, not some website (that most likely is also showing you lots of ads too!) Some simple steps below to fix your home page from being hijacked.
- The first step is to get Geek Superhero and then run its installer!
- Once it's running on your computer, double click it running down in your tray icons
- Then you want to switch to the "Tools" tab.
- On the bottom of that page is an "Emergency Browser Reset". Click that.
- You want to at least do the top 2 items, "Reset Web Pages" and "Reset Permissions", as well as the "Reset Other Settings".
- That's it, your home page is now set to blank and you can change it to whatever you want.
Some especially evil homepage hijackers will add other things to your computer so that your homepage is hijacked again the next time you start Windows or restart your browser. Geek Superhero can help with this too.
- Double click the Geek Superhero tray icon again.
- Then you want to switch to the "Tools" tab again.
- The "Browser Helper Editor" and the "Startup Editor" are the ones to look in. They show a list of things that are plugged into your web browser or that will start when Windows starts.
- If you look thru the lists, you may see things that are related to the homepage hijacker...that would be the one to uncheck!
- If you don't see anything and need some help, you can click the "Report" buttons on the Startup Editor and Browser Helper Editor and paste the reports it makes into an email to us.
Frequently Asked Questions - Geek Superhero
- Geek Superhero warned me about a new program (X). Where do I find out what it is?
There are 1000's of files, many good, but a few bad. Your best bet is to search for the filename using Google or another search website. They will often find lots of information to help you figure out if the file is good or bad.
- I get an error about "INSTALL.LOG" not found when Uninstalling Geek Superhero?
I'm not sure why, but sometimes the install program doesn't save that file properly. Then uninstalling has problems. Just download this file and save into your Geek Superhero folder, normally you'll be saving to C:\Program Files\Geek Superhero\install.log
- What does Geek Superhero protect me from?
There is some good information on these pages: Features, and specific items (this second one if you know a bit about the registry, etc.)
- I opened an email attachment and Geek Superhero suddenly started warning me about changes?
Most likely, you just opened a Virus or Trojan email! That's how most viruses spread these days, as email attachments. You'll want to click "Fix It Back" for the settings Geek Superhero is warning about.
More Steps:
You should make sure you've got the latest virus scanner and start scanning for viruses. If you don't have a virus scanner, McAfee is the one I use.
You should reboot your computer so the virus isn't running and sending out more messages to everybody you know.
