Software Description:
The Palette program is a tool for the creation of 'theoretically correct' melodies.

The program is based on composition theory and the theory of harmony. The strong theoretical base makes the melody composing process easier.

The program contains seventeen lessons. Each lesson has one or two demo-scripts. The lessons sequentially describe all process of melody creation.

The program represents the melody in a structure that is analogue to the structure of common speech. There are words (motives), phrases, sentences, commas (caesuras), question marks and points (cadences). Such an approach allows a simple and effective algorithm to be applied to the composition of melodies.

The program implements twenty four methods of motive development. Some of them are listed here: variation; inversion; repetition; new rhythm; sequence and so on. These methods are similar to the visual effects in graphical editors. The program suggests the 'theoretically correct' algorithm for the melody creation. The main advantage of the algorithm is: we take some existing part of a melody (motive or phrase) and apply the methods of motive development (for example, variation) to this motive of phrase to create a new motive or phrase of the melody.

Key Features:
  • The program represents graphically the structure of melody being created. Boundaries of motives, phrases and sentences are clearly shown.
  • Seventeen lessons sequentially describe all process of melody creation. Each lesson has a demo-script that illustrates a theme of the lesson.
  • The program provides the following methods of motive development: sequence, variation, repetition, extraction, inversion, new rhythm generation and so on.
  • Chord Editor includes all frequently used triads, seventh chords and their inversions. Additionally, Chord Editor suggests the only chords that are in accord with the logic of functional motion. It makes it easy to create the right harmonic progression.
  • User can choose the arrangement of chord inserted in a motive. Only those arrangements are suggested that are in accord with voice-leading rules.
  • The Motive Editor is implemented as the traditional Piano Roll editor. The editor has a mechanism that prompts to a user how and when to resolve the non-chords tones.
  • The program supports two file formats: '*.ptt' - own xml-based format; '*.mid' format.
Editor's Review:
The Palette - Melody Composing Tool is a professional music creating tool. It provides kinds of instruments to compose music. If you are beginner, you can also use the software, because it has demo lessons which can teach you how to use it.
