Frequently Asked Questions - Audio Notes Recorder
- What is the difference between analog and digital
cassette files?
Analog and digital represent two working modes of
the program. In digital mode cassette file can contain several recorded
messages and each new click on Record button creates a new message.
On the other hand, in analog mode cassette file contains or represents
only one message that you can overwrite or extend by clicking on Record
button again.
- I tried to make a recording, but all I got was
silence. Why?
When you start recording the signal animation line
on the program's front panel should show activity. If it stays flat
then most likely nothing is recorded. To make a successful recording
check volume controls for recording first. Click on Settings and choose
Volume Controls C Recording, then make sure the correct sound source
is selected and adjust its level if necessary.
If the recording goes ok, but you do not hear anything on playback,
click Settings, choose Volume Controls C Playback and make sure Wave
and Master outputs are not muted and adjust their levels if necessary.
- I want to backup recorded cassette files, where
should I look for them?
ou will recognize your digital cassette files by
.XDC and analog by .XAC file extension. Default location where the
program saves them is: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\XemiComputers\Audio Notes Recorder\My ANR Cassettes
- I am trying to record in VOR/SPY mode, but all
I get is "pssst" on the program's front panel.
First try to make a recording in normal (NORM) mode
to make sure everything is ok with the sound source you want to record
from. If you want to record in one of the other two modes and you
are getting only "pssst" that means that the input signal is too low
or does not exist at all so the program thinks there is nothing to
record. You can try to increase the recording volume and experiment
with different levels for "Suppress microphone noise level" option.
To find that option click Settings, choose Options and select Recording
tab. Please note that VOR/SPY mode might not work with all hardware
configurations.
- I get a lot of static when audio cable is plugged
into the computer. How do I remove the static, or what kind of audio
cable should I use?
Pay attention where you connect audio cables. External
devices should go into Line In, and microphones into Mic only. During
a recording shake cables a little bit to see if there will be any
difference. Touch the jacks on both sides of the cable as loose connections
might influence the signal quality. It is also possible that static
comes from the device you are trying to connect your computer with.
Another source of trouble could be interference with some magnetic
field source. It could help if either the computer or the device is
electrically "grounded". In the volume controls for recording always
select only the source you will record from and unselect all the rest.
- Each time I want to start new recording there
is that message "Cassette limit achieved. Recording aborted". What
should I do?
That message means that you have reached the recording
limit for a single cassette file. You have two options to continue.
One is to simply create new cassette file and the other is to increase
the limit for existing cassette file.
To create a new cassette file click Eject, then Choose New Cassette
File Sound Quality, click Create New Digital Cassete, type in some
file name and click Save.
To increase the limit click Settings, click Options, choose Recording
tab and move Cassette Size slider to the right. You can also type
in some higher value for Max Cassette Size to get more space on the
Cassette Size slider. However, please note that there is an absolute
maximum of 2000MB for any cassette file.
- How can I specify my own drive/folder (such as
"E:\My Documents\ANR Recordings") for saving cassette files?
Just create a new cassette file in the folder of
choice and that folder will be used as default for future cassette
files as well. To create a new cassette file click Eject, then Choose
New Cassette File Sound Quality, click Create New Digital Cassete,
select a folder for it, type in some file name and click Save.
- Attempted to export a recording to MP3, the following
message shows up: "No codecs installed! MP3 conversion is not possible!"
That message means that you do not have Fraunhofer's
MP3 codec on your computer so conversion to MP3 format is not possible,
sorry. Unfortunately the codec is not available as a stand-alone product
that you could download. Windows XP computers should have so called
advanced version of the codec by default. You can try to use the other
sound compression method available in the program and export your
recordings to OGG format. It is similar to MP3 and as an open-standard
does not require any additional codecs.
