Searching

Search

Select search parameters according to your requirements.
  • filenames
  • file size
  • file dates
  • attributes
  • text
  • zip files
The search parameters are not compulsory, Except for the starting directory. If no extension is entered, PDFsearcher assumes that "*.*" has been entered and all file extensions are included.

The search parameters can be saved by pressing the SAVE Button. If this is done, then the parameters can be loaded by pressing the LOAD Button. These parameters can then be used in further searches or as a base for changing the file search parameters in another search.

All Fixed Drives

All fixed drives on your computer will be selected for searching. Removable drives such as floppies and CD-Roms will NOT be searched.

Look in Drive and Directory

This listbox contains drives and folders which are selected. Previous drive selections can be selected from the listbox.

Date

File Dates can be selected on the basis of -

Creation Date - i.e. the date that the file was created on the computer

Last Accessed Date - i.e. the date that the file was last used in a program

Modified Date - i.e. the date that the file was last modified

The default is to ignore all file dates.
  1. To Select a date you must highlight the WHEN box.
  2. Then select Use dates

    OR Within

    OR Between

  3. Select a number if time Span is selected.
Size

Files can be selected according to file size criteria. If no file criterion is selected, then the default is to ignore the file size of all files.

The file size criteria are
  • Any Size - Ignore all file sizes
  • At Least - files must be at least this file size in bytes
  • At Most - files must be less than this file size in bytes
  • Between - file size must be between minimum file size specified and maximum file size specified
  • Equal - file size must equal this number in bytes
Attributes, Dates, Size

This screen is used for selecting the file attributes, file dates, file sizes and filetimes of files to be displayed.

Text

Files must contain the searchstring inside the file. If you view a file that meets the search parameters, then you will find the searchstring somewhere inside the file.

Text Search is used to find files containing specified text strings. Any letters, words or phrases can be used. The length of the string is indefinite and the string will be matched exactly. If CaseSensitive is checked, the string must be in the appropriate case or it will not be found. eg .if "Go" is entered in the text box and case sensiitive is checked, then the word "gOld" will not be found, but "Gold" will be found. see Case Sensitive search

Note - If a typing mistake is made or the phrase is not exactly the same in the file, then the matching file will not be found.

Some text string searches can be time consuming depending on the length of the file and phrase used. E.G. do not use 1 or 2 letters only as a search phrase.

Whole words can be found and Boolean operators (AND OR) used.

The number of OCCURRENCES in the search results depends on whether AND is selected for Boolean comparisons or OR is selected or if you are doing a multiple string search.

CRC

The CRC value can be used to compare files.

CRC = cycling redundancy check sum. The CRC sum is often used to uniquely identify a file.

If you have 2 files with the same name, file size and crc, then there is a 99.9% chance that the files are duplicates. But this will not detect 2 different versions of the same file

If the CRC is 00000000 then it is likely the file is in a zip archive and could not be extracted for a CRC calculation.

DO NOT TRY TO DELETE FILES WITH CRC OF 00000000 .

An example of a valid CRC is E491D890 .
