Strayfire 1.0 - User Guide and FAQ

The Shield - You won't last long in the game without using your shield! By default, the shield is engaged by pressing the "A" key on the keyboard, or by pressing Button two on your joystick. The blue meter in the bottom left portion of the screen tells you how much shield energy remains. In addition, you can harm your enemies by flying into them with the shield activated!
Score Crystals - To score high, you need to collect the blue crystals (shown below) left behind by destroyed enemies.
Weapon Powerups - The green, glowing orbs (shown below) will power-up your ship's weapon in the game.
Frequently Asked Questions - Strayfire
- The game runs fine, but I only see things like the thrusters and explosions. The 3D objects such as spaceships are not visible, what's wrong?
This problem appears to present itself on some machines that have the DX8 debug runtimes installed. Strayfire uses DX7, but for some reason when the DX8 debug runtimes are installed, the 3D objects aren't visible. Using the DX8 or DX7 retail runtimes should fix the problem, but we recognize that's not the most convenient solution and still hope to find out exactly what might be causing it.
- When I try to run the game, it freezes my system. What's wrong?
The only reports we've received of system freezes occur with some GeForce-based cards under Win2k. If that's you, the solution for those who've reported it was to simply download and install the absolute latest drivers from NVidia.
- The game runs fine, but when I try to run it again, it freezes up. What's wrong?
Much like the previous support question listed on this page, the only reports we've received of this particular phenomenon were from users with GeForce-based cards under Win2k. If that's you, the solution for those who've reported it was to simply download and install the absolute latest drivers from NVidia.
- Why are the statistics displayed on the screen so big? Can I reduce their size?
Some people like the HUD large, some prefer it small. If the default arrangement is too annoying for you, you can switch to the mini HUD by editing the strayfire.ini file in the game's /settings/ directory. Simply change the line "useMiniHUD = false" to "useMiniHUD = true".
- The game runs fine, but the player ship moves out of control without even touching the keyboard or joystick. What's wrong?
Your joystick is most likely not calibrated. Strayfire uses DirectInput, which means you'll need to configure your joystick through the DirectX section of the Windows Control Panel. If you would like to disable the joystick, edit the file strayfire.ini in the game's /settings/ directory. Change the line "useJoystick = true" to "useJoystick = false".
