Font Creator 5.6 - User Guide and FAQ

Your First Font -- a Brief Tutorial

The quickest way to introduce yourself to Font Creator is to make a font. To make it personal we will describe how to make a font of your own handwriting.

On the File menu, click New to create a new font.

It is important to give our handwriting font a personal name, otherwise we will not be able to identify (and install) the font properly. The font name is not the same as the filename (for example timesbd.ttf has Time New Roman Bold as the font name, where Times New Roman is the font family name and Bold is the font style).

To give our font a name we type "hello" in the Font family name field and press the OK button.

Now you will see the Glyph Overview window. All cells have a caption and a part that shows the glyph.

The name can be seen in the caption area. All glyphs with light blue outlines need glyph data. In this tutorial we will add this data for glyphs mapped to character A and B.

Frequently Asked Questions - Font Creator

  1. Is Font Creator available for a Mac?
No, the software runs on Windows only. However fonts created with Font Creator should also work on Windows 3.11 and Mac OSX.

  2. How can I change the height of a font?
To change the top and bottom of a font: select Settings from the Format menu to open the Font Settings window and select the Metrics page. Here you can change the Win Ascent (Top) and Win Descent (Bottom). You should also update the other ascender and descender values. To update all values at once, press the Calculate button.

  3. I want to change the font name, but I don't know how. What is the solution?
The font name is stored inside the font, so changing the file name won't work. The easiest way to change the font name is to use the AutoNaming wizard available from the Tools menu.
