Frequently Asked Questions - Web Site Publisher
- Can I use Web Site Publisher to public a website created using Microsoft Publisher?
Web Site Publisher can be used to publish any website where the files locally need to be copied up to the server, this therefore includes websites that use html, asp, php, perl etc. Some desktop publishing utilities (such as Microsoft Publisher) can be used to create pages for the web. If these can be saved as html then Web Site Publisher can be used. If these cannot be saved as html files then Web Site Publisher is not suitable.
There are a number of web creation tools which (like Microsoft Publisher) save a website in a proprietary format. These include Microsoft Publisher, BlueVoda and there may be others. Where the website is stored in a proprietary format you are obliged to use the publishing tools built into the authoring tool (i.e. Microsoft Publisher, BlueVoda etc).
- How to specify the destination directory on the remote server?
To specify a destination directory (under which everything will be copied to) on the remote server:
1.Open up the site configuration properties for the website, by highlighting the web site in the list of sites and clicking "Config..."
2.On the "FTP parameters" tab, edit the "FTP upload address" to include the destination directory.
For example, let's say that the ftp address of the server is:
ftp.domain.com
and the desired destination directory is
public_html
then enter as the "FTP upload address":
ftp.domain.com\public_html
- Is it possible to run Web Site Publisher from the command line or from a batch file?
Web Site Publisher has a graphical interface and is not intended to be run from the command line. However, a command line utility is available that provides similar functionality to Web Site Publisher and this can be run from the command line or from a batch file. It is currently used in a number of companies as part of their backup regime, can be used to update a website or even copy files down from an FTP server. It can be obtained on request, please contact support@cryer.co.uk for further details.
- What does the message "Renegotiating connection" mean?
Occasionally in the log the message "Renegotiating connection" may appear. This message means that an unexpected error has been encountered whilst communicating with the FTP server and that Web Site Publisher is about to re-establish the connection and retry the operation. For example a poor quality network connection can sometimes manifest itself by the connection to the FTP server being broken. If on a subsequent retry it still cannot succeed then the error may cause Web Site Publisher to stop and issue an error message.
Normally "Renegotiating connection" is a message that should not cause any concern, because Web Site Publisher will re-establish the connection and continue.
- When I upgrade will all my settings be saved?
Yes. When you upgrade from one version of Web Site Publisher to a newer version, all the settings for your web sites will be preserved. Where a newer version of Web Site Publisher supports settings which were not available to earlier versions these will be automatically set with reasonable defaults.
- Why is the "Publish" button disabled?
The "Publish" button and "Publish All" buttons are disabled when the version of Web Site Publisher has passed its expiry date. No other functions are disabled. To re-enable publishing ensure that you download and install the latest version of Web Site Publisher.
