Frequently Asked Questions - PingCOPA Ping and Traceroute

  1. How do I ping selected IP addresses, rather than a complete subnet?
The PingCOPA network monitoring software gives you many ways to customize the list of IP addresses that you are going to ping.

If all the IP addresses you want to add are in the same subnet, open the ping viewer and ping an entire subnet. i.e. 192.168.10.1 to 192.168.10.255. When this has finished you can select just the IP addresses you want in your ping selection by holding the key down and left clicking on the required addresses in the viewer list.

Now right click and select "Save Selection" from the context menu. After you have saved the pcv file, click on the "Load Configuration" button and only the selected IP list will be displayed. This is a far more efficient way of pinging as only the required addresses are pinged.

If you want to define a range of addresses from different subnets with the PingCOPA network monitoring software, open the viewer and right click in the view list area to display the context menu. Deselect "Search Subnet". This will allow you to define specific IP Addresses. Now right click on the ping list area to display the context menu again, and select "Add IP Address". You can now add as many different IP addresses as you want.

The defined range can be saved by clicking on the "Save Configuration" button.

  2. How do I get PING working on Windows Vista?
The ICMP firewall settings in Windows Vista have been moved to a location which is almost impossible to find.

Open your windows control panel. If you are in classic view open Administrative Tools, otherwise open System and Maintenance, then Administrative Tools.

Open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

Click Inbound Rules and wait. Windows confusingly says "there are no items to show in this view" while it is populating the view.

Click New Rule. Select Custom and then Next. Select All Programs, then hit next. In the Protocol type dropdown select ICMPv4 and then press next. On the scope page leave the default values and click next. On the Action page leave the default values and click next. On the profile page leave the default values and click next. Give the rule the name ICMP Ping, or something memorable to you, you can add the description that the PingCOPA network monitoring software requires this. Then press finish.

Ping should now work fine from within the PingCOPA Network Monitoring Software.

  3. Is PingCOPA Compatible with Windows Vista?
Mostly. The trace route functionality of PingCOPA will not work on Windows Vista. At this time Windows Vista will not return ICMP Time Exceeded messages back to an application. This prevents PingCOPA from being able to trace the route correctly.

Some information will be returned to the trace route but the IP address and Domain Name information will not be present.

All other aspects of the PingCOPA network monitoring software will work just fine on Windows Vista.
