Magic Notes 3.4 - User Guide and FAQScreenshots - More DetailsSending Notes Over a Network The note sending facility of Magic Notes allows you to send a note via a network to another computer, either inside your local network or over the internet This feature uses the TCP/IP protocol just like other internet applications. Before you can send a note you need to know the computer name or IP number of the computer you are sending to. This feature can also be used to send notes across the Internet as long as you know the IP address of the computer you're sending to. Magic Notes has a specially assigned IANA port number (3023) that it uses to both send and receive notes. Sending a Note over a Local Network First, the program needs to be running on each computer that will be sending or receiving notes. Second, you will need to find the IP address or the computer "name" to use as the "address" in the alias list. The method for finding the other computers' names varies depending on which version of Windows you are running, but basically you'll want to go into Network Neighborhood (or the corresponding window in your version of Windows) and open the "Computers Near Me" or "Find Local Computers" window. Windows will search the network and list the other computers that are running. If you are going to address the other computer using its "netbios" name, you will need to create an alias for each computer you'll be sending to. Open the note you wish to send to another computer, right-click on the title bar of the note and select Net Send Note (or use the F4 function key). This will open the Network Send window. In the "To" field, enter the Alias or the IP Address of the computer you are sending the note to. Note: Once you have successfully sent a note to another computer, the IP Address or Alias will be available to be selected in this field by clicking on the down arrow at the right side of the field. Click Send to send the note. Sending a Note over the Internet In addition to sending notes over a local network, it is possible to send notes to other computers over the Internet. The procedure for sending a note over the Internet is nearly identical to sending a note over a local network, the only difference being that you must address the note to the receiving machine's IP Address (or use an alias that is addressed using the IP Address). Sending a note to a computer's netbios name over the Internet will not work. Receiving a Note No special action needs to be taken to receive a note. If another user send a note to your machine, you will be notified of its receipt with a Notification window and the note appearing on your computer. If you do not wish to see the notification window, you can turn off that function by opening the Preference dialog and selecting the Network tab, and un-checking Receive notification when a note arrives. Note: It is recommended to leave the notification option functional so that you will be aware of any new notes arriving on your computer. To block a particular user from sending notes to you, you can add them to the Ignore List Firewalls If you are using a firewall, port 3023 needs to be open for transmission over the Internet to work. If this is not appropriate, going can change the default port used by Magic Notes by opening the Preference dialog and selecting the Network tab. You need to restart Magic Notes for port changes to take effect. Note that the program will both send and receive on the same port. Frequently Asked Questions - Magic Notes
