What is the Windows Clipboard?

The Clipboard is a mechanism provided by Windows for different applications to share data (or for a single application to store and later retrieve the same data). That data can be simple text, or formatted text with font and similar information, or it could be a picture, a sound, or anything else.

The clipboard can be simply considered as a component of Windows that "looks after" a piece of data given by a particular program (in response to a copy command), and allows other programs to take a copy of that data if they ask for it (in response to a paste command). It can also answer questions like "have you got any data?"; "what data formats have you got?"; "have you got data of Format XYZ?" etc.

The Windows Clipboard isn't a program or a file or anything that you can really point at and say "that's the clipboard"; it's just a mechanism to allow different programs to share data. The Clipboard Viewer that is supplied with Windows is not the Clipboard. It is simply a program that can ask the Clipboard what formats it has, and can display more common formats (Text, Bitmaps and Metafiles mainly). The Clipboard is always available no matter the Clipboard Viewer program is running or not.

Some private formats are very specialized and only useable by one specific program.

Frequently Asked Questions - X2Net SmartBoard

  1. I have imported my address books from SA 2000 to Version 5, but the phone/fax/mobile/email details have not been transferred in the correct order, so all the labels are incorrect. What can I do?
When you convert the Smart Address 2000 Database, there is a message issued saying the Templates cannot be converted. This means that you simply need to redefine the field layout for each of the addresses to label them how you want them. To do this, select the Address Book Properties command from the File Menu and on the dialog displayed, select the Field Layouts page.
