HDX4 Player 1.5.1.415 - User Guide and FAQScreenshots - More DetailsWhat are container formats? AVI (short for Audio Video Interleave) is a multimedia format defined by Microsoft, which is derived from the RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) introduced for Microsoft Windows 3.1. On computer systems running Microsoft Windows, AVI is the de facto standard for A/V files. AVI stores audio and video in interleaved data structures called streams. The AVI file basically forms a container for the streams inside, the data itself can be encoded using several different methods. Interpretation of these streams is performed by a codec. The FourCC (Four Character Code) is an indicator which identifies the format of the individual data streams contained in the AVI file. MP4 is the container intended for MPEG4 content by the Moving Picture Experts Group. The MP4 file format is originally based on Apple's Quicktime file format. MP4 files can store multimedia content like multiple video and audio tracks, subtitles, 2D and 3D graphics and images. Using appropriate software, this content can be streamed over the internet in real-time. It is, however, uncommon to embed all kinds of content in MP4 files, for the sake of compatibility between different applications. In theory this is not much of a problem as "private" tags (called Flags or Atoms) can be used for such, it just makes not much sense. .3gp files are used to store data intended for usage on mobile devices, especially videos with very high compression. It is for instance used by mobile phones. One minute of video including audio just consumes half a megabyte of space which equals merely 30 megabytes for one hour of full-motion video.
