Frequently Asked Questions - Webcam Zone Trigger
- Zone Trigger is very CPU hungry, is there any way to lighten its work load?
Real-Time video capture and processing can be CPU expensive, and may slow down your computer. In the Settings dialog, try the Force use of Video For Windows option. With this option, you will not be able to use DV cams, but it should be faster.
Another trick to lighten things up is to lower the frame rate with the Check for a new image option (still in the Settings dialog).
- When I capture videos using Zone Trigger, the AVI files are huge. Why? And How can I get a reasonable file size?
This is because of the selected video codec. Video codecs may vary from one computer to another. For compatibility reasons, the default codec used by Zone Trigger does not use compression. This provides the best image quality and compatibility at the cost of huge files. You can change the codec in the Settings dialog, on the Trigger tab.
You can download and install additional codecs to your computer. I recommend the Xvid codec, it is fast and provides very small file size while keeping an excellent video quality. You will find many places to download it from when entering "xvid download codec" keywords in any web search engine. http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/
- A Hot Spot work fine, but when I trigger it non-stop during a few seconds, it stops working.
It does that because you "Burnt" it out. Hot Spots are always adapting to their environment's visual noise (the natural movement of the environement combined with the distortion of the webcam). When a Hot Spots detects continual movement, it will calibrate itself to it, and will trig only if the movement is increased more. Here are two solutions for this problem: Let the spot "cool down" for a few seconds, or increase its sensitivity (with the Sensitivity slider in the Hot Spot's properties).
- Can Zone Trigger support many webcams at once?
The current version of Zone Trigger can only deal with one webcam at once. However, you may run many instances of Zone Trigger at once, each supporting a different video feed. Beware that some USB webcams require more bandwith than others, and might conflict with others.
- When I select Screen Capture as a capture device, my computer slows down because Zone Trigger takes up 100% of my CPU time. What's up with that?
The thing about video screen capture is that it is very ressource-expensive. There's no way around it. When using this feature, I recommend lowering the Check for new image option in the settings dialog to 1 or 2 frames per second.
