Getting Started

Launch the program

If you have no map loaded and program starts with blank map, the New Network Map Creation Wizard should start. You should see the window offering you two options:

Continue with New Network Map Creation Wizard.
Create clear map and add hosts on your own.

When the first choice is selected, New Network Map Creation Wizard will start. Just follow the instructions which are displayed on the screen, and you are able to create your network nap fast and easily. Allow the program to work through your firewall, if the need arises. The wizard is quite simple and intuitive. It allows scanning Windows and IP networks both. After wizard finishing you can go to "Memorizing and saving the map".

When the second choice is selected, the program will allow you to form the network map manually or by using built-in scanner. You will see blank network map. Now you can either simply add devices to the map using the context menu (Add device) or launch the network scanning process via the main menu Service | Search or Service | Scan IP address range for detecting all available hosts including switches and routers. Use the hotkeys.

Run the Scanning process

The time required for completion of the scanning depends on your network's performance and may range from a fraction of a second through several seconds or minutes (in case of scanning big IP address range). Once it is complete, you will see domains/workgroups (you explore them by double-clicking on them) or hosts (in case of scanning IP range) listed on the map. You can arrange them on the map any way you like. The map can be memorized on the Maps list or saved to file.

Open domain or workgroup

When you double-click on a domain name or select the context-menu item Open, you will see the list of computers that belong to that domain. You can also arrange them on the map any way you like by selecting several items together and dragging them with the mouse. When necessary, the device icons can be lined up by selecting the option Alignment.

Add lines and regions to the map

It is recommended to draw lines connecting hosts to make your map more readable. You can group hosts inside regions (for example, regions may represent rooms or buildings) easing up locating needed object on map. Read how to draw lines and regions here.

Memorize and save the map

The map can also be added to the Maps list or saved to file. Maps, added to the Maps list, will be loaded automatically on the next program start.

Use the context menu, toolbar, and main menu to access the program's functions.

Frequently Asked Questions - LANState Personal

Q: What is the difference between LANState and LANState Personal Edition?
LANState Personal is a simplified version of LANState, which has no Windows remote administration features, but network mapping and monitoring functions remain. It can be recommended for home and Internet usage in IP networks.

LANState Standard (or simply LANState) is a network mapping, monitoring, and management software solution, which has built-in Windows remote administration features. It can be recommended for corporate Microsoft Windows networks.
Q: How to monitor servers using LANState Personal?
A: Turn on background pinging and checkmark needed monitoring methods (ICMP ping and/or TCP port checking). Then add alerts for servers or hosts of your choice. To do this, please click the device and select "Set Alert" in the context menu (or press Ctrl+F2).
Q: Which background ping interval should I use for monitoring of my network?
A: If you are the administrator of the network, you can set quite small interval as little as 1-2 minutes (nobody will hurt you for that). But if you are just a regular user we recommend using larger intervals up to 5-10 minutes. Other network users or the system administrator might not like that you ping their computers too often.
Q: How to create new network map?
A: Click the main menu "File/Create" (or press Ctrl+N). New clear network map will be created. Then you need to add hosts on this map. You can do this in the following ways. 1) Press F3 to scan your network neighborhood if you use Microsoft Windows network. This method is quite fast if your network is set up properly. 2) Or click the main menu "Service/Scan IP address range" if you use IP network, or you need to get all the hosts from big or buggy network. 3) You can add needed hosts manually. Right-click the map and select "Add host" from the context menu. Fill in all the parameters and click "OK". You can use Network Map Wizard since the version 2.3.
Q: Which TCP port should I define for monitoring FTP-servers?
A: Set the port 21.
Q: Which TCP port should I define for monitoring web-servers?
A: Set the port 80.
