Software NewsSamsung and WD Improve Hard Drive OfferingsSamsung and Western Digital announced improvements to their respective storage lines on Monday, in order to keep with market leader Seagate. Samsung, ranked far behind Seagate and Wester Digital, has not introduced a drive using perpendicular recording, which orients bits vertically to maximize the density of the drive. Otherwise, however, the 7,200-RPM SpinPoints offer the standard features of their rivals: 3.0-Gbps I/O transaction capabilities, Serial ATA Native Command Queuing, device-initiated SATA power management, and staggered spin-up support, as well as ATA streaming. The drives access data with 8.9-millisecond average seek times; a 16-Mbyte optional cache buffer will assist performance. WD's drive, meanwhile, incorporates the FireWire 400 and 800 standard interfaces, as well as USB 2.0. Features include "SmartPower" automatic power on/off, Safe Shutdown, and LED activity lights. The drives also includes EMC's Retrospect Express backup and system recovery software with a customized setup wizard. This news is from PC Magazine.
